History
The Magdalena festival celebrates the founding of the current city of Castellón, with the relocation of the people who lived around Castell Vell, on Magdalena hill, to La Plana area.
Even though this festival has a long history, it wasn’t until 1945 that it became Castellón’s main celebration.
Light, street performances, local and visitor involvement, fireworks and music have been its main features ever since.
The festival is a living thing that draws from traditions and new experiences. For example, in 1988, thanks to Moros d’Alqueria Cultural Association’s initiative, The International Music Festival was created and it still goes on today.
The Festival shows how Castellón’s festival has gained international recognition. Almost every continent has taken part in it at some point.
EVOLUTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
In 1989, The first edition took place when Junta de Festes – newly formed that year – picked up Moros d’Alqueria Cultural Association’s idea who had already started taking part in festivals abroad. With Moros d’Alqueria’s experience and Junta de Festes’ support a show that soon won over Castellón’s people began.
Parades, stage concerts, official receptions for participating groups… all these elements were part of festival since then.
In 1999 Junta de Festes took over organizing Festival directly – always acknowledging Moros d’Alqueria’s great work – aiming for more internationalization which led to groups from other continents joining in.
The representatives of the Junta de Festes expanded international contacts entering directly with official embassies and agencies. As a consequence, the festival reached high quality dimensions and was enriched when receiving participants beyond Europe.
Parades and stage performances in different parts of city were improved. International Bands took part in street entertainment events.
In second decade of 21st century Municipal Board of Festivals was created and Junta de Festes became a Collaborating body. During this period it is worth mentioning that for some years International Music Festival was part of FAMM! a brand that included different artistic musical and entertainment activities during Magdalena festival.
This year organization wants Festival to have its own identity again and improve its activities always keeping spirit that defines Castellón’s festival: enjoying it on streets encouraging involvement and making our city capital of party music heard around world.
